If you are looking to top off your American Airlines account, you can currently purchase American Airline miles with a pretty generous bonus offer. Although it is a tiered offer, you can earn up to 100,000 bonus miles when purchasing the maximum number of miles. This promotion expires Nov. 28, 2019.
You can purchase a maximum of 150,000 miles and get 100,000 bonus miles for a total of 250,000 miles. Purchasing the maximum number of points will cost you $4,479.50, including taxes/fees. This means you are essentially buying American Airline miles at 1.92 cents per mile. There have been offers in the past with the same “up to 100,000 bonus miles” but also offered a 10% discount on the purchasing price. With that being said, this is still one of their better offers.
When it comes to purchasing miles, as a rule of thumb, it typically is only lucrative for those wanting to fly business/first class. For those who are content with economy, usually the numbers do not add up, but you’d have to check the math and see if it is worth it.
Should you buy American Airline miles with this promotion?
While there is no cut and dry answer, this promotion could be great for some, but not others. As mentioned before, those who primarily redeem for domestic travel will most likely not see the value, but for those that desire business and first class internationally, this could be a great deal! Remember though, you will not earn miles when redeeming miles. And you’ll also be on the hook for the taxes and fees charged when redeeming your miles.
You can check out the American Airlines award chart and OneWorld partner award chart to see the number of miles needed for each route.
I will personally be opting out of this promotion. I am not in need of any more American Airline miles right now and these promotions never made sense with speculatively purchasing points. If you know of a trip you’d like to be taking, do the math and see if it makes sense. If you’ve been eager to take that business class Cathay Pacific flight to Asia, for example, this could be the perfect opportunity!
Will you be taking advantage?
