The American Express Gold Card made its grand appearance a few weeks ago and is a great card to maximize your points earned and money saved on food and travel! With the new launch of the card it is available in a cool Rose Gold metal, but only for a limited time through January 9, 2019. UPDATE: The “Rose Gold” color is no longer available. This card is a new version of the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card — existing cardmembers will receive the new American Express Gold Card as a replacement and the welcome bonus is only available to new cardmembers who have not previously had the PRG card. While this card is currently offering 35,000 Membership Reward Points after you spend $4,000 on eligible purchases with your new card within the first 3 months, when the card launched a few weeks back I wrote about an opportunity to possibly earn even more points by signing up via a referral link. *Terms Apply. See Rates & Fees

Maximize Your Points and Statement Credits!

This is one of the richest cards cards for restaurant and supermarket purchases. With this card, you’ll receive:

  • 4X Membership Rewards points at Restaurants worldwide
  • 4X Membership Rewards points at U.S. Supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases annually, then earn 1x points)

You’ll earn up to $10 per month in statement credits when you use your card at eligible dining partners. Assuming you are able to maximize the statement credits earned, this will give you a $120 dining credit every single year. Some participating locations include Shake Shack, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, and Grubhub/Seamless Web.

This card also gives a nice 3X Membership Reward point bonus on flights booked directly with airlines on Although, I prefer to use a credit card which carries travel protection, and this card does not.

Similar to many other American Express credit cards, you’ll also receive up to a $100 airline fee credit per year. This is good for incidental fees at your selected airline. It works the exact same as the statement credit received from the American Express Platinum card and the existing American Express Premier Rewards Gold card.

My Thoughts

This is definitely a “cool” card and I love the concept of the Rose Gold. UPDATE: “Rose Gold” is no longer available. Although I personally do not apply for cards based on the metal type, this is definitely a card worth considering. While there is a $250 annual fee (See Rates & Fees), on a yearly basis you’ll receive up to $220 worth of statement credits ($120 on dining credits+ $100 on airline fee credits). Assuming you are maximizing your statement credits (which there is no reason not to!), this nets out at a $30 payment for the card per year. In the first year, you’ll also earn the 35,000 Membership Reward points from the welcome bonus after meeting the minimum spend requirement, which is worth around $550 depending on how you redeem your points.

If you are one who spends a ton on food, whether it is dining out or grocery shopping, earning 4x points at restaurants worldwide and U.S. Supermarkets is pretty amazing. While the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express will give you a 6% statement credit at U.S. Supermarkets, you are capped at $6,000 per year. Many folks would also say that 4x points is more valuable then 6% statement credit as well. On the restaurant side, the American Express Gold Card is far superior then the point you’d earn on any other card. Overall, this is by far the best card you can have for those food purchases!

FYI. I ordered the rose gold card 1st day, October 4. Got my plain gold card today. Neither the original csa nor I knew/understood that ALL cardholders from same account get the same card. Today’s csa verified I can’t get rose for only myself. My son and husband don’t want rose. I’m bummed.
