I absolutely love BOGO sales in the travel world. When traveling with a family, these types of sales really helps decrease our total cost to half of what it would originally cost. Travel + Deals = 1 Happy Family! Right now, Amtrak is running an interesting promotion where a companion can travel with you for free between March 25 and July 29, 2019. All you have to do is purchase your train ticket by February 18, 2019.
The best part about this sale is that this offer is valid for both coach and Acela tickets. Many times you can grab an Acela for not that much more than a regular coach train. There are also no blackout dates which is nice and if you book this far in advance, you should be able to still grab some inexpensive fares for the first passenger.
Unfortunately though, the promotion does not apply to “Saver” fares, which is where you’ll find the cheap fares. With that being said, taking advantage of this promotion will still allow you to save money with the “Value” fare. Or, if you are looking to booking an Acela, there is no such thing as “Saver” fares, so this promotion will absolutely save you some money! On the random day I looked for a train between New York and Boston, I saw $125 fares available for the Acela for two passengers. This means $62.50 per passenger which is pretty unheard of for the Acela.
Overall…
If you know of an upcoming Amtrak reservation you need to make, now might be a great time to book to save some money. Fortunately, once you book into the higher fare bracket, you are able to cancel your reservation easier. For “Value” fares, as long as you book 8 days prior to departure, your fare is 100% refundable. If it is within 7 days of departure there is a 25% cancellation fee.
Anyone taking advantage of this great deal?!

Seems not to work in Southern California no matter how many permutations I try… basically trying to take either the Coast Starlight or the Pacific Surfliner from Orange County/Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo. Any tips on how to get the BOGO to apply?
