This is part of the reader question series that I started earlier this year – you can view more reader questions here. Feel free to email me at dealswelike@gmail.com if you have a question you’d like answered in a full on post. Reader TJ emailed me yesterday wondering if his wife is eligible for the Starwood American Express credit card offer (related post).
“My wife is an authorized user on my personal Starwood American Express credit card, but is she able to apply for the offer herself? If so, is she eligible for the entire welcome offer? Thanks for your help!”
Yes! Those who have a Starwood American Express credit card as an authorized user on someone else’s account are eligible to apply for the card and receive the current bonus point offer. This also means that you are able to refer your significant other and not only will she receive thebonus points (assuming she meets the minimum spend requirements), but you will also get 5,000 bonus points for referring her! Also, those with the same address are able to freely transfer points from one account to another with no cost. So if you already have a bunch of points in your account, you can ultimately transfer your wife’s accrued points to your account. This can allow you to have enough points to redeem for a specific award, or if you have status you can essentially book with your wife’s points but utilize your status perks. For those interested in the current Starwood American Express offer, here are some ways to apply:
- Referral: If you know someone with the credit card, ask them to refer you. They will receive 5,000 bonus points. I’d appreciate the opportunity to refer anyone for the personal version of the card (you can email me at dealswelike@gmail.com), or you can ask a friend/family member to refer you using these links: Starwood American Express Personal referral link; Starwood American Express Business referral link
- Direct link: There are now direct links to apply for the card, but you might as well ask someone to refer you as there is no reason to leave the 5,000 referral bonus points on the table! Starwood American Express Personal direct link; Starwood American Express Business direct link

Can you show a source? I spoke to an amex rep, and she claimed that once you’re an AU, you can’t get the sign-up bonus, unless you’re targeted. I dis-agreed with her, and demanded a supervisor. Supervisor confirmed what earlier rep said. I told her that all bloggers say not so. She said that’s only with a targeted offer.
I chatted with amex online, and they said- as you say – that it IS eligible.
Any thoughts?
@chuck – my source is based on my personal experience, and those of reports I’ve read from others.
