With Black Friday happening just next week and deals already starting, I am putting together many posts on tips to maximize your savings. This first tip is one of my favorites since it could potentially put some unexpected money back into your pocket after your purchase — as long as you use the right credit card. There are a few credit cards that come with Price Protection where if the item you purchase goes down in price, your credit card will actually reimburse you the difference. Every credit card has slightly different benefits, where you can receive between $250 to $500 back within a 30 to 60 day timeframe.

Unfortunately, many credit cards have gotten rid of the price protection benefit, but there are still a handful that offer this money-saving perk. If you have a hunch that the item you are purchasing might in fact go down in price, make sure to use one of these popular credit cards.

Credit card price protection will reimburse you the difference if the item goes down in price.
Make sure to use a credit card that offers price protection.

Capital One Price Protection

There are four Capital One credit cards that all offer price protection. All of them are the Capital One Spark credit cards, which includes:

  • Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business
  • Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business
  • Capital One® Spark® Cash Select for Business
  • Capital One® Spark® Miles Select for Business

Caps

  • Days for the price to decrease: 60 days after purchase
  • Refund difference cap: $500 per item
  • Refund cap per year: $2,500 per year

How to File a Claim

  • You’ll need to call 1-800-MC-ASSIST to request a claim form.
  • Once you receive the form, you’ll need to submit the form with all required documents, such as a copy of the printed advertisement, a receipt of the original purchased item and your credit card statement.

Wells Fargo Price Protection

The Wells Fargo Visa Signature card also offers price protection, although the yearly cap is not quite as high.

Cap

  • Days for the price to decrease: 60 days after purchase
  • Refund difference cap: $250 per item
  • Refund cap per year: $1,000 per year

How to File a Claim

  • Notify the Benefit Administrator at 1-800-553-7520 within ten days of the printed Advertisement showing your product at a lower price.
  • Return the claim form and the requested documentation within twenty days of contacting the Benefit Administrator.

US Bank Price Protection

US Bank offers a Best Value Guarantee only for the US Bank Cash 365 American Express Card. Although, the benefits are not nearly as strong as the cards listed above as you only have 30 days from the time of purchase.

Cap

  • Days for the price to decrease: 30 days after purchase
  • Refund difference cap: $250 per item
  • Refund cap per year: $1,000 per year

How to File a Claim

  • Call 855-327-1424

Overall…

Making sure to use a credit card that offers price protection can ensure that you are actually getting the best possible price. While some stores will give you a price adjustment after a week or two of your purchase if you bring in your receipt, the credit cards give you a much longer time frame and the sale price can be at any eligible store (not the same store you purchased your item at). The item can have also been gifted or opened and you’ll still be able to receive a difference in the price as long as all of the other terms are met. While there is definitely some manual work to be done on your end, it could definitely be worth it for large ticket items.
