A few months ago I wrote about about the Citi Bike program where they have lined many streets in Manhattan with shared bikes for rent. In many areas of town bike lanes have also been designated, so they are really trying to promote biking around the city. There was a free offer for the Citi Bike program if you had a MasterCard although this just expired at the end of October.
Groupon is now offering the following:
- 24-Hour Pass Options
- $15 for three 24-hour passes ($29.85 total value)
- $45 for ten 24-hour passes ($99.50 total value)
- Seven-Day Pass Options
- $25 for two 7-day passes ($50 total value)
- $64.98 for six 7-day passes ($150 total value)
Keep in mind that this is not a bike program to cruise around NYC for the day. There are caps on how long you can take the bike out for before you are charged an “overtime fee”. Here are the restrictions/fees:
- 7-day pass: Must return the bike to a kiosk within 30 minutes. If you do not return the bike to a kiosk within the 30 minute time period you will then be charged $4 for the second half hour, $13 for the third half hour, and $12 for every half hour after that.
- Annual membership: Must return the bike to a kiosk within 45 minutes. If you do not return the bike to a kiosk within the 45 minute time period you will then be charged $2.50 for the next half hour and $9 for every half hour after that.
However, with both programs you can dock your bike at a kiosk and then take it right back out and your time will re-set. You can learn more about pricing here.
This eliminates the need to keep a bike in your cramped apartment and save on commuting cost. It is also beneficial for those who visit NYC often and would prefer to bike to different locations around time instead of venturing on the subway or dealing with a taxi.
This Groupon expires a year from now – November 7, 2014.
