Welcome to another post of helping a reader travel!
This weekly post is to help readers get a slew of travel advice from thousand of Deals We Like blog readers. Thus far, we’ve been able to help other readers travel to a slew of domestic and international destinations. Check out recent destinations and comment on suggestions here.
Last week I hit on Vietnam as a whole, but I want to touch upon many of the major tourist cities throughout the country. This will include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Halong Bay, (let me know of this are any other cities you want me to cover)
This week is going to be dedicated to Halong Bay, Vietnam. Here are some things I am sure readers will want suggestions on:
- Where to stay
- Recommended junk boat company
- How many days to stay
- Sites to see
- Restaurants recommendations
- Anything else you might think is valuable!
Let’s help out the reader Gene who originally requested this help along with other readers looking to plan a trip to Vietnam!
Also, if you have any upcoming travel where you need some help, feel free to email me at dealswelike@gmail.com to be a featured “Help a Reader Travel” Monday special. Thanks!

Hi there,
We spent 3 weeks backpacking in Vietnam and it was just paradise. We stayed on Cat Ba island in Halong. We found these huts Cat Co 2 which are directly at the beach. I must say, it was not the cleanest, but still an experience of a lifetime. To get to these huts, we had to walk for 5 mins and pass through a small cave. The hut itself is tiny, with two mattresses on the floor and covered by a netting, to avoid mosquitoes. They have shared shower rooms. We spend one day soaking up the sun and the beautiful scenery. Our 2nd day we rented a motorbike and visited all the island through the forest. We met some local people, who invited us for tea whilst visiting a cave which used to be a hiding place for soldiers during the war. Restaurants are located all in one road where you get the ferry and they all have tourist menus. Overall, we would love to go back. Vietnam was paradise for us.
We just returned from Viet Nam and spent a week in Hanoi. We stayed at the InterContinental Westlake which was very nice. We traveled to Halong Bay for the day which was a mistake. The trip takes 3.5 hours each way and the roads are not very good. There were only three people in a 15 passenger van so that was OK. But we were rushed. A short boat ride on the lake with lunch and back on the road to Hanoi. I suggest at least one or two nights on a nice boat. Also, we never saw the sun for 7 days, go when the weather is better.
Fave place. Once you select your junk boat, tell them it’s your honeymoon and be sure to ask for how you can pay for the most private, special experience possible. You will get an amazingly inexpensive, highly personalized junk boat overnight. Trust me.
