Back in July I booked flights for my family of four to go to Cancun for this Winter, although the baby is still a lap child for the next 6 months so we only had to pay for 3 seats. We used a decent amount of JetBlue points for this flight, but it was by far the best option and allowed us to fly non-stop which is always ideal with a 4.5 and 1.5 year old in tow. We spent 30,900 points total for our Boston to Cancun flight and 29,400 points for our Cancun to Boston flight.
At that time, JetBlue allowed you to get a price adjustment if your flight went down within 14 days after booking your flight. I checked every single day, but no luck. We were also going over Martin Luther King holiday so I figured there was no way our flight would go down anyways. Now you only have 5 days after booking to get a price adjustment. Then in October my husband made Mosaic status which meant we could get a price adjustment on the flights at any point up until the day of departure! So I continued to check the flight prices again every single day. Our return flight pretty much doubled in price, so I gave up hope on that flight. But to my surprise our departure flight went down not once, but twice in price in just the past week!
The first time the flight went down in price, I called the JetBlue Mosaic line, explained our flight went down in price and the agent was able to cancel and re-book, keeping the same confirmation number. Not only that, the taxes went down slightly, so I received a $1.36 credit per ticket to use for a future time. Instead of it costing 10,300 points per ticket, it went down to 5,700 per ticket – almost half price!
The second time it went down in price, the agent just credited my account with the point difference. While it was only a 1,500 point difference in total, it only took me about 5 minutes to make the call and get the points credited.
So right now I am only paying $120 worth of points for a one way flight from Boston to Cancun during peak time! And there is always the chance that the flight will continue to go down in price! Of course the return flight is almost sold out so there is no way I’ll receive any points back for that flight, but I am extremely happy about the departure flight.
This is a reminder that if you have Mosaic status, check your flights every single day. You never know when your flight will go down in price and getting the points back into your account is extremely easy! And if you paid for your ticket (instead of using points), you’ll receive a voucher to use for a future flight (valid for 1 year from the date issued and can be used on any passenger).
