Last week, American Express announced a new credit card to their portfolio – the American Express EveryDay Credit Card (you can learn more about this card along with the Preferred version here).
For those of you who were not aware, there are two types of Amex Membership Reward credit cards – those that earn full Membership Reward points and those that earn limited Membership Reward points. Accounts with full Membership Reward points means that you can transfer your points from your account to a partner hotel or airline program. If you have a credit card that earns limited Membership Reward points you will NOT be able to transfer your points to partner loyalty programs. You can redeem your points for merchandise, gift cards, etc.
Well, one of my favorite aspects of the Amex EveryDay credit card is that it earns full Membership Reward points! And it has no annual fee! This is actually the only credit card where you can earn full Membership Reward points that charge an annual fee.
Having this card can ensure that you can always keep your Membership Reward points even if canceling the card that the points were tied to. As I explained in this post: “If I Cancel My American Express Platinum Card, Can I Keep the Points?“, if you cancel your Amex card that earns Membership Reward points, you will lose your points unless you have another Amex card that also earns full Membership Reward points. So let’s say you currently have an American Express Platinum card and are thinking about canceling the card. You currently have points in your account and do not want to transfer them out to a loyalty partner just yet as you aren’t 100% sure where you want to use them. If you are an Amex EveryDay cardholder, then you will not lose your points and still be able to transfer them to a loyalty program at another time.
This is a great card and one that I recommended a few times to use on various spend categories.

What if I have a business Amex Card and get this Everyday card? Will it keep my points active despite the fact that my current card is a business card and the everyday card is a personal card?
Thanks for the great post. I was approved for the AMEX PRG around mid March 2013 and my statement close date is on the 28th of each month. I haven’t seen the annual fee posted as of today. I wonder when the fee will show up???
@JW – It will probably show up soon.
At the moment you can’t do a product change to this card, but you will be able to do so in the future.
I received updated T&C the other day, and noticed my Biz Plat rewards aren’t transferable to airlines?? I guess this is my oversight, but never heard that mentioned before on any ad for it? Would this allow me to transfer all those MR points and then transfer again to an airline?
Would I be able to transfer points between amex plutinum business card and amex everyday card?
@deWeb – You do not transfer points, but instead they all go into the same account.
I have the Amex Gold Business card and was thinking about getting this Amex Every Day CC (no annual fee) to keep my points from expiring. I was looking at the terms & conditions and noticed this in regards to transferring the points to a loyalty program:
“Membership Rewards® Program – Transfer Points (Domestic Airlines)
Enrollment in a participating Frequent Flyer program is required. Airline tickets are subject to availability. For each conversion of points into the Frequent Flyer program of a U.S. airline, a fee of $0.0006 per point, with a maximum fee of $99, will be charged to your Card account. We charge this fee to offset the federal excise tax we must pay on such conversions. The fee may be more or less than the actual amount of the excise tax we pay on any individual conversion. We may offer you the option to redeem points to pay this fee. ”
It looks like the Amex Everyday card charge sa tiny fee just to transfer points to a loyalty program (airline), but I don’t think the Amex Gold Business charges a fee? Any thoughts on this?
@Brandon – With all membership rewards earning cards (including the Amex Gold Business card), if you transfer your points to a DOMESTIC airline then you are charged a fee. It is the same fee regardless of the card you have. If you transfer to British Airways, for example, you are not charged the fee since it is an international airline.
