Over the past few years, one of the more lucrative ways I’ve earned free money and points is by buying coins from the US Mint. This is not the same method that many people took part in years ago where they’d purchase coins from the US Mint on their credit card and deposit them to their local bank. Instead, this is through PFS Buyers Club.
Essentially, every now and then, I receive an email from PFS letting me know that the US Mint will be releasing some limited edition coins. If you are able to purchase them, PFS will essentially buy the coins back from you and pay you a premium. Not only that, you can purchase the coins from the US Mint with a credit card and PFS sends you a check when they purchase the coins back from you. That means you are also earning free credit card points for the purchase. PFS also makes the transaction extremely seamless. Once you purchase the coins, you will put your order information on the PFS site and they send you a prepaid shipping label. Once the coins arrive on your doorstep, you attach the shipping label to the box, and drop it off at FedEx. Once PFS receives the coins, they will send you a check in just a few weeks.
While there is no actual deal right now, signing up for an account and getting on PFS’s email list is important. Since enrollment for each deal is limited, it might max out within a few hours. And to be eligible to have your coins bought back, you must register for the deal in advance. PFS will send out an email every time a new deal is coming.
How good are the deals?
Typically, you can profit anywhere between $25-$100 per offer. While that might not be a ton of money, the effort it takes is so beyond minimal, that even at $25 it is well worth it! And on top of it, you can sometimes charge as much as $1,000 or more on your credit card, so you’ll earn points/cash back for that too. The best is if you are trying to meet minimum spend on a particular card offer – this is an easy way to get there!
How often is there a deal?
They are sparse. While a new deal came out a few weeks ago, I think the last one we saw before that was back in September 2016. Although last summer there were 3 of them I believe in just a few month time period. So you really never know. But it is worth setting up an account with them and the US Mint so you are prepared for the next time an opportunity comes around. You can create a PFS account and register for this offer here. Things to Know
I’ve taken advantage of these offers MANY times. I’ve never once had an issue and found the process to be beyond easy. With that being said, it is important to follow the directions of the deal exactly as stated. If it states to purchase X number of coins, make sure to purchase that exact number. If it tells you to purchase all the coins in one order, make sure to do that. If it tells you to not open the box of coins when you receive them at your house, do not open the box! As long as you follow the directions, you’ll be good to go. It really is a simple process, I promise! You also must always register for the offer in advance, or you will not be reimbursed. And if you do register, make sure you are actually going to purchase the coins.

I’ve heard of this before, but never signed up. My small fear is if something happened similar to Tulving Company from years ago. Long story short, they bought and sold coins to/from people and then would send them a check until they ran into some problems and stopped paying people and eventually declared bankruptcy.
But these deals sound like they’re smaller scale so it’s probably worth the risk.
Is there a way to buy coins or bills directly from the Mint, assuming you live close to one, that makes any sense from a MS perspective?

How does PFS make money? I’m curious what is their business all about. I’ve taken advantage of their deals in the past with success but it seems they must be selling the coins to other possibly international sellers or have some access that would account for the extraordinary volume of coins they are purchasing. Anyone have any insight here?
