UPDATE: This offer has expired.

This past week Marriott announced a huge rebranding effort to align all of their credit cards. As of today there are 5 Marriott credit cards between American Express and Chase. However, they are discontinuing 2 cards which means February 12 is the last day to apply for both The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express and The Marriott Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card from Chase. Those who apply for these cards will still have access to them going forward as they will still be supporting by the banks—you’ll still receive your points and benefits, just the name will be changing.

I received a few emails over the past few days with readers if the The Marriott Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card from Chase falls under Chase’s “5/24 rule”. Even though this was a card that always fell outside of the rule and you could still apply for even if you were over 5/24, a few months ago Chase started to incorporate more of those excluded cards. Most notably we started seeing it with The World of Hyatt Credit Card. My initial assumption is that the Marriott Premier Business card probably now was subject to the rule, but I just read some data points on another blog this morning that people are actually being approved for this card. While there aren’t too many success stories yet, there are still a few, and not yet one story of an applicant not being approved due to 5/24. As of now, this means to me that this card is still excluded, which would be great!

Is this card worth applying for?

If this card actually isn’t subject to Chase’s “5/24 rule” then this is a card to definitely consider before it goes away in a few weeks. It is another way to increase your Marriott balance another 75,000 points and then receive another free night certificate annually (capped at a 35,000 point hotel). And since it is a business credit card it won’t count towards future applications when counting your “5/24” status. Chase and American Express business credit cards are not counted towards your 5/24 status.

The one downside to applying for this card now is that it will prevent you from applying for two other Marriott credit cards — Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card and The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. Once the full rebranding occurs, both of these cards will offer a 100,000 point bonus offer. You won’t be able to apply for the Luxury card (which will then be renamed the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant) for another 24 months and for the Starwood Business Card (which will be renamed Marriott Bonvoy Business), you’ll have to wait 30 days until after you cancel the Marriott Rewards Premier Business card. So while getting these two cards in the future is possible, you are looking at far in the future!

Now, if you’ve already received the sign up bonus for the Starwood Luxury or Starwood Business cards in the past, you are not eligible for them anyways. Despite them being rebranded to new names, they will not be considered new products. American Express’s once in a lifetime policy ultimately makes you ineligible, which is unfortunate.

Overall..

Ultimately, it depends on your situation on whether or not you should apply for this card! I’d rather hold out for the 100,000 point offers, assuming you are eligible! Also, feel free to comment below on whether or not you were able to get approved for the card despite being over 5/24.

I need some clarification please. I have the Mariott personal card but have never had the business card from chase.

I do not have any of the Mariott/SPG amex business cards.

If I apply for the Mariott chase business card, will I be able to later apply for the AMEX card and get a bonus? If so, when would be the appropriate time to do so. also, would I get the Mariott bonus from chase for the business card?
