Just a few minutes ago I posted about a great way to earn 5,000 Membership Reward points by purchasing an Amazon Prime Membership through your registered American Express credit card with Amex Offers. Unfortunately though this is limited only to those with Membership Reward earning credit card members and it still might even be targeted for those members. Make sure to read the prior post on how to register your card!
If you have no need (or desire) to purchase a $99 Amazon Prime Membership, there might be a loophole to still earn the points. If you purchase an Amazon Prime Membership gift for someone, you are charged for the purchase immediately, but can select a future date on when the Prime Membership is delivered. Now if the person you send it to (you can also send it to yourself) is already a Prime member, they can exchange the Prime membership for a $99 Amazon.com gift card instead. If you consider an Amazon gift card the same as cash (like I do since I shop on Amazon daily!), then earning the 5,000 bonus points on “purchasing” the Membership is pretty much free points! You are ultimately “buying” a $99 Amazon gift card to earn 5,000 Membership Reward points!
One thing to note: I am not 100% sure that purchasing an Amazon Prime Membership through a gift will trigger the 5,000 bonus points. I am assuming it will, but I do not yet know if it will. I will try it myself and report back! No where in the terms does it state gift purchases are disqualified – it just states that it only applies to the purchase of “non-discounted annual Amazon Prime membership” which this is. UPDATE: Based on comments below, it looks like this option is not triggering the statement credit. Although, within the next week or two we will find out definitely.

I just bought the “gift” membership for myself, already turned into a $99 gift card … no issues there.
Still didn’t receive the Amex “Congrats, you redeemed an Amex Offer” e-mail, which usually comes immediately for most offers for me; makes me think it won’t trigger. We’ll see.
Waiting eagerly to see if the gift idea works, my prime renewed last month
I just had to renew my Prime membership on September 18….any chance I can get that refunded and then pay with this offer?
Yes please do let us know if purchasing a gift card for Prime membership will work & if we can gift it to ourself? Thanks for another great blog post! Everyone always posts the same thing but you go one step further! Love it!
@Kelei – I suggest initiating a chat message with Amazon through your account to ask if they can cancel your subscription and you can then re-join.
subscribe
Would also like to know if this works. I just renewed mine as well
does it wotk?
@wesz – reports are showing it might not work.
So any reports of it working for buying a subscription for yourself and having a gift card instead of a prime Membership?
I want to know if it’s going to work or will I have to fight with Amex to credit me the 5000 points?
Still waiting for your update?
Thanks.
@Myi – Reports seem to show it is not working unfortunately.
