Mr. Deals has decided to come back to his blogging duties from his sabbatical leave (that spanned over many many months, possibly years) to write about a great way to save money on skiing this winter! So here you go…

Wait a minute, a post about ski season when it’s the beginning of June? For whatever reason, the weather decided to drop to the point here in Boston where we’ve taken the fleece jackets back out of storage and considered putting the heat on. Oh and this just happens to be the best time of year to score deals on season passes for the 18/19 ski/snowboard season.

For those of you interested in this sort of thing, Vail Resorts, pretty much the biggest player in the game of owning mountains, is in the process of acquiring 4 new properties. The Epic Pass, which is Vail Resorts combined season pass offering, will add Okemo, Mount Sunapee, Crested Butte, and Stevens Pass with unlimited, unrestricted access on their 18/19 season pass.a screenshot of a website

This is big and I’ll explain why. Two of those new acquisitions are popular east coast resorts. Okemo is in southern Vermont, while Mount Sunapee sits south of the White Mountains in New Hampshire and is an easy day trip for Boston area folks like me.

Previously the only mountain in the Vail Resorts network that was on the east coast was Stowe. It’s still part of the pass, however, Stowe is no hop/skip/jump from Boston. It’s a weekend commitment. As a northern Vermont mountain, it happens to be one of my favorites, but it’s way more reasonable for me to make a quick trip to Okemo if I’m going to head to Vermont for a short trip.
So what are you options with passes? The two core ones are summarized below but definitely check out EpicPass.com for more details on what will fit your needs. These two passes cover the most mountains in the Vail Resorts (and partner) network, so these are likely the best bang for your buck if you are going to hop flights around the country (or world) to get your snow fix:
  • Epic Pass (the full experience):  $899
    • Access to all 65 resorts in the network
    • Now includes 7 days at Telluride, 7 days total at Resorts of the Canadian Rockies and 5 days total at Hakuba Valley, Japan!
    • No blackout dates
  • Epic Local Pass (a slightly limited experience):  $669
    • Access to 27 resorts in the network with some limited restrictions
    • 10 Days to Vail, Beaver Creek, and Whistler with holiday restrictions
    • Some mountains are blacked out for key holiday time periods (check the site for more)
If you are more of a local especially in the Colorado or Lake Tahoe areas, you should take a look at the options on the site. If you aren’t traveling there are some great deals to be found. If you are a military vet or active service member, your deals are pretty epic, so definitely take a look.
Now you might not be thinking snow right now, but remember, these prices can and likely will change as the season approaches. When it comes to passes, this time of year is when you can find the best deal, and isn’t that what we are all about!??!!
Fingers crossed summer comes back soon!
