So this Coin thingy

Another blog post from Mr. Deals…

I’m sure you all have heard about Coin by now. I mean if there ever was a target audience for a product like this I’d have to believe it’s the readers of a blog like this or many of the BoardingArea blogs. When it launched, my Twitter feed was just blowing up with it. As someone in the tech industry, I couldn’t avoid it. When I was watching the video I felt like he was talking to me directly with the hidden message of “Mr. Deals, I made this for you.” Yeah so I bought one right away.

My relationship with Mrs. Deals has one downside. It’s forced me to carry a Costanza wallet. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, simply watch this clip from Seinfeld. Coin solves this problem. If it works like they say it will, I can load all my cards into the app and have 8 of them at my disposal on the actual card itself. When talking about this with friends over dinner the other night, the first question was, “you have eight card?” I probably have 20 cards, and at this point, I don’t even know where half of them are thanks to Mrs. Deals.

So if the video’s have sold you, these things are $50 + $5 shipping for a limited time (they are $100 after). They give you a referral link to use so you can recoup up to the $50 cost of the card. I’m going to slap mine right here:  https://onlycoin.com/?referral=OWzic5II

No pressure to use the link, but I figured I’d give it a shot. Feel free to post your referral link in the comments section as well. The things won’t ship till sometime in 2014. I’m guessing they are trying to sell as many upfront to pay for the production. Fingers crossed they are sent sooner than later.

Commentary from me, Mrs. Deals!

Although my husband is fully onboard getting this coin, I will not be! Mr. Deals is in the start up tech industry and definitely likes to support the start ups, which I respect. He purchased one within seconds of getting into work Thursday morning. He likes to be the first one to try new things out and be ahead of the game. He is also MUCH more responsible than me! So this is why I will not be getting coin:

  • It is a $50 item, which I absolutely do not mind spending if it will organize my life and credit cards. But… the chances of my losing the coin card is very very very high! I admit, I lose my credit cards often (or misplace them as I like to say). Or If I do not lose it, there is a good chance I’ll spill water on it or something. If you lose or damage the coin card you are out $50, and they say that the price will go up to $100 eventually. Purchasing a coin card to me is like taking a $50 bill and literally throwing it down the drain.
  • Since the chances of me losing the coin card is high, I am slightly nervous about the security of the card. I know with the credit card companies I can immediately call up and request a new card and be free of any fraudulent charges. With coin, it is just another layer of security issues (in my opinion).
  • The device can hold up to 8 cards. While that is great for most, 8 slots just won’t do it for me. If it had a thousand slots, I’d be more inclined (not that I need that many either!).

So for right now, I am sitting this one out. However, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that the device works and assuming it does and they figure out a way to replace the device for cheaper if it gets lost/damaged, I will be on board. I’m going to let others test it out first and then decide.

Will you be pre-ordering coin? What are your thoughts. And, if you did order coin, feel free to leave your referral link in the comments section. You will get $5 towards the device, up to $50 (so can ultimately be free).

I can’t believe how many people are signing up to get these coins. If ever there was a pyramid scheme, this is it. Just my 2 cents.

Nope, sorry. I want something I can see and hold, not a nebulous something a few months away, which, because of production glitches, etc, may be even a few MORE months away, all the while giving the scammers more time to accumulate and use the money that fools have sent them. If the money were held in an escrow account, and could be refunded unconditionally, this might be a more acceptable deal, but for now, nope.

Mrs Deals, if you are someone that is apt to misplace a card ,then this is prefect for you; because it will send you a text went you leave it behind.

Am I the only one that notices that the Coin Card doesn’t have your name printed on the front of the card? Good luck buying big ticket items (err VRCs) when they need to verify your identity on your card and drivers license.

Earlier I had a concern about skimming of data, but now apparently the app tells you how many time your card was read. So you would eventually know if it was used somwhere else ! moreover now they are offering a morse code style pwd which you need to click after you select a card so that the waiter cannot cycle through other cards !

Pre order one now !
