A new Amex Offer popped up today where you can earn 5 additional Membership Reward points on all purchases at Amazon.com. To be eligible for this offer you’ll need to have a Membership Reward-earning American Express credit card and activate the offer in your American Express account. Although you are capped at only earning 2,000 points, so only your first $400 in purchases will qualify.

Although many Amex Offers are targeted these days, this particular offers seems to be available on most accounts. Sign into your American Express account online and make sure to add the offer to your card. Only purchases made after you activate the offer will be eligible for the 5x points.

Combine with the 20% discount

Amazon is also running a separate promotion where you can receive a 20% discount by applying just 1 Membership Reward point to your purchase. (Check if you are eligible.)This means you’ll not only get the 20% off, but you’ll also earn 5x points on the final cost of your purchase. Just keep in mind that the 5x points is up to your first $400 in purchases, while the 20% discount is only up to your first $250 in purchases. You you even combine with their daily deals.

With Amazon purchases soaring these days, maximizing both promotions should be quite easy to do. And even if you do not have any particular purchases to make, you can always purchase a third-party gift cards sold by Amazon, and receive your 20% discount and 5x points.

Depending on how you typically redeem your Membership Reward points, this promotion can be worth about a 10% return on your purchase, which is quite good. (I personally value my points at about 2 cents per point).
